Very recently a client asked us about overselling and that made me think a bit... so I just wanted to get your opinions on it.. do you think overselling is justified? Still thinking about what to answer

If by over selling you mean putting more sites on your server than your server can handle then no that it not right. People will get degrated performance and will end up leaving over time so it is bad for the bottom dollar as well.

Hosts that oversell count on their customers not to use up all the resources that is promised. Risky but on average most customers do not use all their resources.
However, I do see a problem growing because of the popularity in marketing "multidomain" hosting now. That is, hosts now allow customers to point many domains to their site and host multiple sites. So my question is, doesn't this set up a situation where a successful "reseller" customer will use up a lot of their alloted resources over time? Doesn't this mean that over time, the hosters services will be degraded the more successful their "reseller" customers become? You know, guys, the greater part of web hosting companies oversells but overselling can be cantrolled and uncontrolled. If it's controlled it's o'k. There is nothing to be afraid of.

It's something that will continue for many years to come I'm sure and won't stop. It is similar in many other industries I'm sure.
